After many many weeks, we finally release the much awaited build to the public and for more details, simply visit Steam and grab the latest update. I won’t bore you with the change log, but there are some nice new toys in there and some much needed fixes too, and the work instantly continues with the internal 003 build which will focus on resolving any niggles that might have been kicked up with such a large 002 update. While going through forum posts today, I got an email showing what I had assumed was presently impossible with Game Guru, which is the creation of a side scrolling platform game: Don’t ask me how it was done, magic is my current theory. It’s days like these that makes you really really grateful to the community that springs up around game making products, as the creativity and pure genius that lives there is refreshing to the soul. Rest assured I will be supporting efforts like these with more LUA commands, to twist perceived reality even more and help wonderful new constructs from emerging. If there was ever a chill day, it would be the day of release. Calcomp Drawing Board Driver.
We’ve pretty much done all the testing we can reasonably do and throw it into the gnashing jaws of the public in the hopes our little creation survives the ordeal. We take this time to review our changes, answer questions in the forum, catch up on emails and generally tidy our desks a little before we get sucked once more into the coding typhoon.
I have a meeting next week to discuss the priority for the next major build and my own feelings (and shared by many in the community) is that performance needs revisiting. I ran some performance tests on all our stock levels, and found on my machine that three of them ran UNDER 30 fps, which is clearly unacceptable. I was pleased that many of them ran well over 60 fps and the various improvements over builds have been worthwhile in this regard. My current view is that we can move the entire engine from DBP to C++, introduce some basic n-core systems for things like AI, logic and some ray casting to reduce the burden on what is essentially a single core product. So that I do not mess up the world in the process, my proposal is to run this optimization step alongside the current build so that we can continue to make small corrections and release minor updates while this major performance overhaul is taking place, but to ensure that we can quickly merge the fruits of the work in with any changes we made since build 002. A bit of a juggling act I agree, but will result in continued updates when you need them and then a BIG boost in speed perhaps as early as July. Even though we have released and it’s too late now, I still continue testing Game Guru just in case I find anything glaring and nasty, but so far it’s looking good.
During my tests, I created a rather nice (and orange) scene to try out a few things, and so here is my ‘random map’ of the day, making good use of some nice rocks in Mega Pack 01 and a touch of DOF in the distance. As I created this, Rick sent me an image and asked if it was created in Game Guru or UE4, and for a long while I could not give a definitive answer, maybe you can find the clues: A second school of thought was that instead of performance work we should focus on a single feature of Game Guru, and continue to work on it until it’s AAA, disregarding deadlines, scheduled, promotions, opportunities or anything else that might distract us. We would essentially be on lock-down on a single specific feature and not let go until it was everything it ought to be and everyone in the team can categorically state they have literally nothing to add. It’s a dangerous alternative, and it’s one that would almost certainly obliterate the current trend of regularly spaced updates in favor of a long agonizing pause with nothing but dev blog updates to keep you nourished. Of course the result would be nothing short of amazing, but you might be waiting months for it, with no guarantee that you will like it when we’ve finished.
The feature targeted could be something as small as the free flight editing mode, or something as expansive as the AI system or the Renderer. Whatever is decided, rest assured that Game Guru continues to expand, and the more we work at improving each component, the greater the product will become and the more you will be able to create. Until then, enjoy the journey and please continue to contribute feedback and ideas, as this is the only way we know if what we’re doing works for you. For right now, it’s back to the forums as I wear my helpful hat and try to tackle all the questions that have not already been answered by our fantastic community. Bookmark the.
