Al 80b tuning slug--15/17 al 80b tuning slug--15/17 (3/5) Ken H>: That webpage has the contact info - about part way down is a 'click here' in bold blue letters will take you to a contact form to request the pdf file for 15/17 mod for 80B amp. Link might take you direct to contact page. Good luck and have fun, 73 de Ken H>Wes Howard: Sorry to necro-post but FYI: I just got done contacting Ameritron about this issue because I'm about to get an AL-80B (and still will). Their response to that specific query was (theirs in bold) that 'there is no such PDF'. The instructions were to ID jumpers on the LEFT side of the amp 'right on the edge of the tuned input circuit. Just cut them and tune the tuned input board for the best output on both bands.'
A follow-up query had someone saying 'it would be on the RIGHT side (so I'm supposing it depends upon one's orientation to the amp). Never use the radio's internal tuner with the amplifier because this will cause mistune on the amplifier. It is ok to use an external tuner for the antenna.' As said, I'm still getting the amp (have already made space on the table for it;D), but this kind of stuff and the plethora of internet 'hits' on the subject and forum back & forth would seem to beg a simple photo or diagram with some accompanying text that Ameritron could simply provide upon request. Especially since there are forum posters saying that Ameritron's own manual says it's OK to resolve SWR between exciter and amp with a separate tuner or the rig's internal tuner; I just went through my AL-80B manual & don't see that. Previously K7KBN had responded in another instance with: Quote If you look on the back of the amplifier you should see a number of small holes labeled '80', '40'. One for each band. The 15 meter hole might say '15/17' or something like that. You will need to find a NON-metallic alignment tool, probably around 0.1'. You insert the tool in the hole and carefully line it up with the slug in the coil, into which it should fit securely.
Then, with the amplifier connected to a dummy load, you simply adjust the coil for the best compromise for 15 and 17 meters - and yes, this has to be done with the amplifier operating. Not necessarily at full power, but it has to be operating. Watch the SWR meter on the exciter and find the happy medium. Frankly not having the benefit of any inside Ameritron info this seems fairly straightforward to me and removes the issues of cutting wires and the extra tuner question.
Am really excited about getting the amp but definitely want some 17m capability (even more than 15). EDIT: Follow-up by Ameritron to clarify indicates that jumpers still have to be cut for the above procedure; not cutting them allows one to adjust 15 OR 17 but not achieve the balance between both. 'If you do not cut the jumpers, then you can only tune 15 OR 17 meters down flat. If you DO cut the jumpers you can compromise tuning between the two bands. Power output will drop about 100 watts or so but you would be able to use both bands without further tuning.
Instead of seeing 900 watts keydown on either/or band, you would see about 750 watts on both.' Capt.jeffrey kellogg: hi gang my al 80b works great.
But i cant get 15/17m to give me swr less than 2.2: 1 i can get 15m down to 1.2:1 and 17m down to 1.3:1 like to see pic of wires to cut for mod for getting 15/17m slug to work together -- cutting 2 wires??? Anyone done this?? Thanks jeff k Wes Howard: K1JK: You may want to re-read this entire thread from the top.
Tom apparently sent you what you need to know in a private message back in October.?::) Allen C. Ward: After a good deal of search for a schematic I found one with a clue as to what is going on. Apparently there have been too coils which the schematic calls 'rfcs' (radio frequency chokes) which have shorting wires across them. One each rfc and short for 15/17 and one each for 10/12. If you cut the short out of the circuit you are adding a bit of inductance to each circuit. Fakhruddin Razi Tafsir Pdf Download. This is similar to a fix I applied to my two SB200's which allowed the input tuned circuits to cover two bands (I did this some time ago and didn't write up anywhere as I figured I would have to spend 24/7 explaining the mod).
Ameritron really needs to get some draftsmen who can draw schematics in the style used by most manufacturers. It is nigh impossible to follow their schematics. Allen Navigation [0] [#] [*].
